Challenge
Smart kitchens are the future, with an expanding range of appliances, containers, recipe ideas, and grocery management solutions such as the Amazon Dash button. While some of these solutions have been transformative, others have failed to address real pain points and may simply push unnecessary notifications. In the kitchen, we want things to be organized, safe, clean, and mindful of waste. The global issue of food waste, with 57% of food produced going to waste, highlights the need for more sustainable solutions. In this context, the question becomes how we might integrate purposeful IoT into food containers for use in the kitchen or on the go?

IO is a revolutionary bento box that combines the convenience of taking food on the go with the power of the Internet of Things (IoT). This innovative lunchbox allows users to easily transport their meals and share them with others, making it a perfect solution for people who are always on the go.
One of the key features of IO is its focus on reducing food waste. According to a study by the World Wildlife Fund and Tesco, 2.5 billion tonnes of food are wasted yearly, representing 40% of all food produced for human consumption. This equates to more than 5.8 trillion meals going to waste annually. By allowing users to take their food with them and share it with others, IO helps reduce this waste and positively impacts the environment.
In addition to its environmental benefits, IO helps users maintain a healthy diet. The lunchboxes can communicate with each other and create balanced menus for nearby users, ensuring they have access to various nutritious and delicious meals.
The design of IO was recognized for its excellence, earning second place in the Tupperware x Giddy competition. This accolade showcases the innovative and forward-thinking approach of the IO in addressing the important issues of food waste and healthy eating.
